This is the magic question!

Yes unfortunately we have to make some money even though many people think we get paid by the auction. We wish it was that easy.

If you are buying from stock our fee is built into the price of that car and is usually about 5 ~ 7 % of the purchase price. So as you can quickly work out a 300,000 JPY car does not give us much in the way of income. You may ask why dont we add on a higher percentage? The fact is to remain competitive within this market we prefer volume. This enables us to get more exported monthly and we can help people with smaller budgets into better cars.

When we buy a car from auction for you our fee is built into the all up car cost ex Japan and this is called FOB. When we quote you we will always quote FOB which covers everything required when purchasing a car here. Below is a small breakdown of what we pay every time we buy a car.

1. Car Cost

2. Auction Fees ( yes we have to pay the auction for every car )

3. 5% tax

4. Recycle Fee

5. Customs Clearance

6. Transportation Within Tokyo ( additional transportation will be charged for vehicles purchased outside of Toyko )

7. Plus 5 ~ 7 % Buying Service fee based upon the purchase price

This total equates to 80,000 ~ 90,000 JPY per car purchased. There is no escaping these charges so be very careful if you are told there is no fee as it is false. Everything described from 1 ~ 6 is inescapable for any exporter in Japan as they are fixed charges when buying from auction.

Contact us direct if you still have more questions about this: sales@autotraderimports.com

The easy answer to this question is sorry but.

If we allow people to bid on cars themselves we would own more cars than we ever dreamed of. Buying cars electronically is very difficult and requires weeks of practice.

Further more you must be a paid up member of the auction system here in Japan to bid.

We are here to do this for you and will be your eyes and ears on the ground.

By using our auction system you are able to place bids that we can control from our Tokyo office. Place your bid anytime and we will receive confirmation of this and contact you for further instructions. Please dont make bids less than the starting price at auction as your bid will not be registered by our staff.

You must be a member to bid ( http://www.usedcars.co.jp/register ) Guest members do not have bidding rights sorry.

We buy according to demand and price. Obviously it would be impossible to stock every type of car that we are asked for as the variations and financial outlay is immensely prohibitive.

Most of the cars we advertise on our website either belong to us directly or to one of our local Japanese contacts. Remember that all stock cars are sourced from originally at auction and auction is still the preferred method of purchase for us and should be for you if your ultimate goal is to save money.

We hold around 150 cars on a monthly basis. If we dont have what you want please refer to our Car Estimate Page and we will give you and idea of what your dream car may cost from auction here in Japan.

Possibly the most preferred and most economical method of shipping cars. Vehicles are driven onto huge multi level ships by trained staff and then secured to the ship floor using anchor points underneath of the vehicle. There is no way the car will move.

RoRo is great for the shipping of more than one unit and is normally less expansive than using a container as there is no *vanning required.

RoRo is used on more frequent shipping lines and is very efficient. Please ask your Auto Trader Imports contact representative for more information.

Container shipping is exactly as the name suggests.

Why do we still use containers? One reason is some people want there cars protected 110% from any outside element. This is where a closed and sealed container meets the need. Vehicles are carefully placed in either 20″ or 40″ containers depending on numbers and then they are secured in place around the axles etc and fastened to the container itself. Japanese are very good at this and have perfected this to a near perfect business. Loading a car into a container is called *Vanning.

The second reason containers are still used is for infrequent shipping lines. If your country is not a major importer of used vehicles the shipping company will use containers as they can have containers with different items going to the same country. ( dont worry your container will only have a car inside )

We do physically attend the auctions upon request of our deposit paid customers. For most cars we bid live at the auction or from our office.

What does LIVE mean?

What this means is that we click a button on our computer to increase our bid until we either get the car, or it goes over our customer’s budget, so that we stop bidding. Now, since we are dealing with fractions of a second ( cars sell every ten seconds ) there is a risk that when we get close to the customers budget, a single click on our side could be preceded by other bidders clicking their buttons, resulting in a jump in the price taking, taking it a little over the customers’ maximum bid. We have two choices about how we approach this,

First of all, most of our customers realize that, since they are winning cars at auction for less than their budget most of the time, the occasional car bought a little over is not a problem.

For a minority of customers, their maximum bid price is a hard and fast limit. Unfortunately, what this means in practice is that we have to stop bidding a little below their maximum bid price to avoid the risk of a single click pushing the final price over the customer’s maximum bid. The unfortunate side effect of this is that there are cars which would have been buyable within the customer’s budget that end up being won at auction by other bidders. We adjust our bidding style in consultation with each customer.

It is you the customer who decides the bid!

Our business is selling cars, not milking customers for membership fees!

However, we obviously cannot bid on cars which we will have to pay the auction for within a few days unless we know that we are dealing with a serious customer.

Prior to live bidding you will be requested to pay a 100,000 JPY deposit to our HSBC bank account. This deposit is fully refundable if we are unsuccessful but is a requirement to show that our customer is serious about buying a car. ( you could imagine the financial nightmare if we purchased every car upon an email without a deposit )

For your information every time a Japanese exporter buys a car from auction in Japan our bank account is debited for the full amount immediately!

This is a one time deposit and will not be requested a second time once we have established a good working relationship that is developed upon mutual trust.

Basically, we will retain this deposit here for the whole period you are buying from us. If at some point in the future you decide not to buy cars from Japan anymore, you can ask us to close your account and we will refund this deposit to you, minus only the cost of the bank transfer charges, and any money you still owe us for previous purchases (if any).
